Burntshoe
This lineup came about with the departure of Brent Larson mostly, but with the nature of things in bands at this time it was a gradual change of sorts. Brian Oeffner, who had been in the band from it's days as the Jury, left in Nov. of 1971. Dave Carlson had joined to replace Brian. Then Brent eventually left to be replaced briefly by Denny Allen with Tim Fees replacing Denny and becoming a “permanent” member. Pat had left the band briefly with Steve joining. Then Pat rejoined playing piano with the group until 1973.
The bands name remained unchanged mainly because it was an agreeable name with all the members. Burntshoe had built up the all important name recognition and with the material changing very little, even though the personnel was, there was no need to further confuse the general public.

Start date for lineup: early 1972
Last date for lineup: 1974
Joe Boesen: Guitar, vocals
Howard Bothner: Drums, guitar, vocals
Dave Carlson: Guitar, vocals
Tim Fees: Bass, vocals
Steve Fellingham: Keyboards (1973-74)
Pat Lonergan: Keyboards, vocals (1972-73)
Joe was playing a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with a cherry sunburst finish at this time. For amplification he had a solid state Acoustic head which he used to power a Vox Beatle speaker cabinet. The cabinet was left over after the Beatle head fizzled. Joe was doing mostly lead guitar along with much of the lead singing for the group.
Howard’s drum set consisted of a double kick, snare, 2 shell mount toms and a floor tom or two by this time along with the usual compliment of cymbals and hat.
Dave was playing mostly rhythm guitar with an occasional lead role for the band. He also contributed on background vocals. He had most likely gotten rid of his Fender Strat by this time–or some time during this lineup–and picked up a Gibson Firebird V from Eschbach’s in Ames. He had done some modification to the guitar and had planned to refinish it, but never got that done. As to amplification, he may have had an Acoustic guitar combo amp–it's not real clear what he was using.
Tim played a Fender bass and what he had for an amp is not known.
When Steve rejoined the band he was playing a Hammond M3 and a synth he had purchased as a kit. He sat the synth on top of the Hammond. He had a Leslie cabinet and another amp for the synth, but brand names are not remembered.
Pat was playing a Farfisa Deluxe Compact combo organ with a Sabre amp which he purchased from Klocksiem’s in Ogden for around $1000. When he rejoined he had acquired a Fender Rhodes piano which he purchased for around $600. He used the Sabre amp with the Fender.
The band purchased a fairly nice PA by late '73 and into '74. They borrowed money from Boone State Bank with Steve's father cosigning with them. They had a Phase Linear amp with crossover, Peavey 12 channel board, Electro-Voice woofers, some high frequency drivers with horns and some piezo tweeters along with a 100 foot snake. Tim built the bass cabinets for the group. The PA and it's component parts were purchased from Ralph Stevens who ran a shop in Ames.

Burntshoe practiced exclusively at the greenhouse that Joe’s dad owned. Not a lot changed for the group other than members. The songs they did slowly drifted more toward album oriented rock with much less top 40 tunes. The new members brought their influence which broadened the scope of styles they did, but the songs generally ran along those lines. The diversity that existed during the transition between the Jury and Burntshoe was all but gone by now.
Pat's departure marks the division between this lineup and the next version of the band. After being out of the group and then back in, the reason for Pat leaving was his moving to Topeka, KS to attend Washburn University. He enrolled in business and music courses there. Pat played off and on with various friends there, but never in a formal band like Burntshoe had been. He plays mostly for his own enjoyment these days. He lives in Wichita with his wife and family and works for the Star Lumber Co. where he has been for 25 years.
